Installing ESX 3.5 on HS21 XM

$

Hello All

I am trying to install ESX 3.5 on a brand new HS21 XM (IBM blade) with 73GB 10K NON hot-swap SAS drive.  When it comes to finding the disk where ESX is going to install ESX 3.5 cant find it

If i try to install ESX 3.0.2 on the same machine, it goes thru fine.  No problems at all. It finds the drive.

Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong or what do I need to do to fix this problem

BIOS on the machine is 1.04.

Thanks

VCB and TSM intergration

$

Trying to intergrate VCB with TSM and I've run into an issue which I'm hoping someone can help me resolve.

Let me start off by saying that I am very confident that VCB is functioning correctly because the vcbMounter -h {virtual center} -u -p -a ipaddr: -r -t file command does exactly what it is supposed to.  I'm also very confident that TSM is functioning correctly because I cam able to backup and restore the VCB Proxy server.  The problem is that I cannot get TSM to invoke VCB automatically at the start of a scheduled backup.

I am currently using the "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.4 & 5.5 Technical Guide" as my reference point and I have followed the steps up to page 337.  On page 338 it reads in step 1 "We run the dsmc backup vm command from the VCB proxy."  However, this is where my problem starts.

The exact error message is "Executing Operating System command or script: vcbMounter -h 10.50.201.51 -u vRanger -p **** -a ipaddr:stjh0331 -r C:\mnt\tsmvmbackup\filelevel\stjh0331 -t file 'vcbMounter' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Finished command.  Return code is: 1 ANS9265E Failure mounting Virtual Machine 'stjh0331' with vcbMounter command. RC=1 ANS9264E Incremental backup of Virtual Machine 'stjh0331' failed with RC 1"

I think the problem is related to the -a ipaddr: section because if I manually type the command using the actual IP address it will work.  However, I do not know where or which file needs to be edited to make this change from within TSM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think some driver that not supportted by default from esx 3 or 3.5 are needed for RAID controller SAS 5iR or maybe something ellse that I dont understand happened.

I love VMware and I want to install it because it is realy helpfull for me.

Please some one help to install it.

iSCSI issue with ESX 3.5 and Openfiler 2.3

All

I am working with a test environment of ESX 3.5 on a white box system that is experiencing some strange issues when I try to connect to a another system that is running openfiler 2.3 as an iSCSI SAN.

The issue I am experiencing is that I am unable to connect and see the storage on the system running openfiler. What is most concerning is that when I finish configuring the iSCSI Software Adapter in the storage adapter menu and then do a rescan my ESX server then becomes unreachable via console and all guest OS are unreachable too. I must then log onto the console of the ESX server and reboot to get it back online.

The Network configuration of the ESX server is:

NIC1 is set as the service console on 192.168.1.200

NIC2 is set with the vmkernel on 10.0.0.10

NIC3 is set as the virtual switch for my guest OSes

OpenFiler System:

NIC 1 is set to 192.168.1.90

NIC 2 is set to 10.0.0.1

The ESX NIC 2 and OpenFiler NIC 2 are on there own subnet and a private gigabit switch.

Has anyone seen this before? I tried my best to explain what is happening so please let me know if I let any details out.

Thanks

ESX Downloading vmdk files from Datastore "Connection Timed Out" Error

$

0

When attempting to download vmdk files from my ESX Datastores, I receive a "Connection to server has timed out" Error.

I can download any smal files (vmx, etc.) but when I try to download my vmdk's, I get the error after only about 2 seconds.

The Datastores are LUNs on a Netapp iSCSI SAN with about 40% free space. Connections are 1GB all the way around.

This happens no matter where I try to download the files from (Win 2K, Win XP, Win 2K3 server, etc)

Any ideas?

Observed IP Ranges blank

We plugged one of our ESX hosts into a switch and the observed ip range came up correctly.  We realized the port on the switch was on the wrong VLAN, so we brought the port down, changed the VLAN on the switch and brought the port back up and now the observed IP range is blank.

Does ESX somehow remember the first network it say and saved it or cached it somewhere and now unless that port is on the original VLAN, it won't work?

Does anybody have any ideas?  Thanks for your help!

failed to extend disk the called function cannot be performed on partial chains please open the parent virtual disk

I have taken over administration of our VI3 and encountered this message: "failed to extend disk the called function cannot be performed on partial chains please open the parent virtual disk" when I attempted to expand a virtual disk on a VM that has a total of four virtual disks.  The four virtual disk files are: disk-000001.vmdk, disk_1.vmdk, disk_2.vmdk and disk_3.vmdk.  There is another vmdk file with the name of the VM itself and thought that was the parent but encountered this message instead:failed to extend disk one of the parameters supplied is invalid 1.  Based on the setting information for this VM the disk name is disk-000001.vmdk.  There are no snapshots for this VM and it was not running when I attempted to expand the virtual disk using vmkfstools.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Stop: 0x0000007B Inaccessible_boot_device Error

I have converted a server having windows 2000 adv server with sp4 (Dell 8450 series with 4 processors). I used Vmware converter 4.0 to convert in to VM. Earlier it failed so many times when i choose preservce & SCSI options. It worked it successfully converted into VM when i choose IDE. but ran only in vmware server 2.0. As IDE is not supported in ESX 4.0. Now we are buying license for Vsphere and want this physical machien (dell 8450) into ESX 4.0. I tried converted the machine many times but when it reaches to 97%, it fails on reconfiguration all the time. so I removed the reconfiguration option before converting & converted the files in three different ways. preserve,  scsi & IDE.  Now when i moved in the datastore and configured with VM one by one. (IDE Didnt work since start). the other two Files, failes at the below error all the time.

Stop: 0x0000007B Inaccessible_boot_device Error

It starts well windows 2000 page appears after the bar comes in the middle this error appears. I have tried all the methods to run this VM like converting it Bus & LSI controllers . ESX 4 gives four option BSU, LSI , Para and the fourth i dont remember right now. I tried all 4 ways chaning to make it run but all the time same error appears. I also tried converted the Vmdk files with vmkfstools -i option. But still things didnt work. I dont know what should i do. Can anyone help. For your reference, I am pasting vmx for one of the vmx files below. Appreciate if somebody tells me step by step or atleast guide new way to make this file work.

I am adding a physical RDM through the vCenter on a VM that is powered on. When I add the device, shouldn't it automatically show up under/dev?

dmesg has nothing about the device. Does it require a re-scan? If so how do I re-scan for the new device?

HP DL385 ILO within ESX

Hi All,

I have a question, I am not greatly familiar with ILO so maybe someone can help me.  I have a server at

a remote location I have no physical access to.  The server is running ESX 3.01, is there anyway

to reset the ILO to factory defaults or change the IP address somehow from within a running

VM or from the linux terminal? I suspect the IP is configured incorrectly on the ILO configuration.

Thanks,

Lun does not contain any VMFS/LVM signatures...vcbMounter error Failed to open disk - cannot access SAN/iSCSI LUN

Alright so inch by inch I have been making progress trying to get consolidated backup working to no avail.  Currently this is my progress. I have my backup proxy connected to a brocade fiber switch and zoned it in with my SAN.  From the FC card utility "Sansurfer" I can see the LUN's.  I also added them as an initiator group as well, because that wasn't set up so the LUNs are no longer masked. So my connection from SAN to backup proxy is good.  I run vcbmounter  -h 192.168.11.50 -u root -p ****** -a ipaddr:192.168.11.162 -r E:\test\fileprint and this is the error I get:

Critical Storage Alert on one of my hosts

I've recently applied Update 4 to my VI3 cluster.  The upgrade went smooth, and everything has been running fine for about 3 weeks now.  I noticed yesterday that one of my hosts was reporting a critical state.  When I use VC to check the health status I see that the critical alert is coming from Storage.  The alert that I get is:

Disk Drive Bay 1 Drive 1: in Critical Array - Assert

This message appears for Drive 1 - Drive 7.  The host does not have 7 disks.  It has 4x73GB 15k SAS drives configured in a RAID5, in slots 0-3.  The server is not reporting any errors, and Open Manage also reports no errors.  I tried searching the community, but I wasn't able to find a post with a similar issue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This problem does't seem to be affecting the server, but I'd like to get it cleared up.  I've attached a screen, of the alert, from VC.

Hello

After upgrading my RHES 4 to the latest kernel release I noticed in the startup of my vm that he was showing an error on my vmware-tools.

The system said I had to reconfigure my vmware tools.  After doing that i rebooted the server and now he doesn't automatically start my eth0.  When i go to network setting and i start the mic my network recovers.

What can that be?

I have just upgraded to Virtual Center 2.5. I have users that cannot browse to the ISO datastore under the CD/DVD configuration without giving them Administrator access at the DataCenter level. They currently have Virtual Machine Administrator permissions and I have even tried giving them Administrator access at this level without success. It has to be at the top level in order for them to browse the datastore. I've read that this is a known bug but, I have not found a resolution that works. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

HP C Class blade as centralised storage provider?

Hi,

I'm thinking of installing a HP C CLass Blade enclosure and using the HP's storage blades (model SB40c running SAS hard disks) as the shared storage location for the VMs. I plan to host about 15 servers on the system, maybe a few more over time.

Do you see any issues using the SB40c's as the VM's shared storage?

Many thanks
