Hello all,
I have a licensing question of sorts. I am migrating to new hardware and I do not know how to make the migration work from a licensing prospective.
My environment consists of: (2) Dell PowerEdge 2650's running ESX 2.x, (1) Dell PowerEdge 2950 running ESX 3.01, (3) Dell 1955 Blades running ESX 3.01. I have licensing for (4) 2-CPU servers so in VMware terms a total of 8 licenses for VI3 Enterprise and 8 licenses for VC 2 etc.
The (1) Dell PowerEdge 2950 is running offsite for disaster recovery and is using 2 licenses for VC agent, and 2 licenses for VI3 enterprise.
The (2) Dell PowerEdge 2650's running ESX 2.x are using 4 out of the 8 VC agent licenses to provide monitoring but are not using the VI3 enterprise licenses since they are running in stand alone mode.
One of the three blades running ESX 3.01 has VM's already on it but the other two are built but do not have any VM's on them.
My plan is to use esxMigrator to migrate the VM's from the (2) Dell Poweredge 2650's running ESX 2.x to the (3) 1955 blades running ESX 3.01. I need to have both the new and old hardware up and running for esxMigrator to successfully migrate/convert the vm's to the new blades.
What would be the best method to accomplish this? My orginal though is to remove the VC agents off of the (2) esx 2.x servers and that will free up the VC licenses but I am not sure if esxMigrator will still work as both the old and new hardware will need to be up on Virtual Center.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
