How to mount USB drive as VMFS storage?

Can this be done? I have a 1TB external drive connected directly to the ESX 3.0.2 server. Can I mount this sucker somewhere and then add it in Virtual Center as storage, and then clone my VM's to it while they are powered off?

I'm looking for a decent backup solution. Don't have Enterprise, can't use VCB. Using cp command to copy doesn't work as files too large and errors out. There has to be a simpler way to do this with Standard without spending $$$$ on like vRanger.

My ESX linux sees the storage, so why can't I just format it for vmfs and use it?
