Physical NIC mapping to VMNIC in Virtual Infrastructure client

I have an ESX 3.0.2 set up. It is a Dell 6950. It has an on board dual NIC. I then installed two more Dual NIC's. So this host now has a total of 6 ports. The question I have is in regards to the mapping of these actual ports to the  VMNIC's I see in my Configuration > Network Adapters view in my Virtual Infrastructure Cient. More specifically I am not sure what VMNIC maps to the actuall port on my server.

For exmaple on my Dell host I have GB1 and GB2 ports on my onboard NIC. does that mean that VMNIC0 == port GB1 and VMNIC1 == port GB2. If so can I assume that the ports are mapped in that fashion. So the installed NIC in the next slot has ports VMNIC2 and VMNIC3?

Any help would be much appreciated.
