Network card detection on HP DL585 G2

Hi everyone!

I've installed ESX 3.0.2 (and also 3.5) on an HP DL585 G2 server. The server has two onboard network ports (using a NetXtreme II 5706 chipset). I've also added two PCI Intel dual-port cards (82571EB chipset)

The first socket on one of the PCI cards has gone in as vmnic0. Then the two onboards as vmnic1 and vmnic2. Then the second port on the same PCI card is vmnic3, and the other PCI card is vmnic4 and vmnic5.

Does anyone know why the cards might have detected in this order. Why would the PCI one go ahead of the onboard cards? More to the point, why would one of the sockets on the dual card go in front, but not the other?

Thanks in advance,

Greg
