Cannot find any datastores

Hi,

I am evaluating the performance of an ESX server and I am having a difficult time trying to set it up.  I installed ESX server 3.0.1 using the recommended settings ( regarding partitioning, etc).  I went through the installation fine, however when I try to create a new virtual machine, it asks me to select a datastore from the list... however the list is blank.  How do you create a datastore, why don't I have one to begin with?

edit: my test machine is a brand new Dell Optiplex 745
