Unmanage ESX hosts from console

I currently have two ESX hosts running 3.0.2 build 61618 and 3.0.2 build 57941.  I was managing these using a physical server running VC2.0.2 build-104182.

The VC server is no more and the DBase has been lost.  I now wish to create a new installation of VC, and a new database and manage the two ESX hosts.  As I cannot unamange the hosts using the VI client, is there a command I can use to unmanage them from the relevant ESX consoles?

After a bit of Googling I have come up with:

service vmware-vpxa stop

...but after trying this (logged on as root) I just get 'bash: service: command not found'

Any help is appreciated.
