Authd error: 514 Error connecting to hostd-vmdb service instance

Hi,

Last night on of our esx hosts (3.0.1) suddenly rebooted, and since then I can't connect to it again via VirtualCenter (2.0.1), and neither via local web interface.

Following error is generated in vpxa.log: Authd error: 514 Error connecting to hostd-vmdb service instance. Failed to connect to host :902  Check that authd is running correctly.

I already rebooted the server twice, no luck.

I checked for authd with following result: root      2925     1  0 09:58 ?        00:00:00 /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmkload_app --setsid --sched.group=host/system/vmkauthd --sched.mem.min=4 --sched.mem.max=12 /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmkauthd

root     29430 28917  0 10:23 pts/0    00:00:00 grep authd

I found another thread about this problem, and the solution would be to first remove the host from virtualcenter and next remove the vpxuser.  When I try to remove the host, I get the error message "The operation is not allowed in the current state" (the host is greyed out with "not responding" between brackets). Also there's a turned off virtual machine still on the server.

So now I'm stuck.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
