NIC not connecting to 100Mbps switch

I have installed VMware 3.5 U3 on 3 HP BL460c blades. I am trying to connect these to a 100Mbps switch for one of the VM networks. none of the NICs are connecting to a 100Mbps switch, both the onboard NICs or the NC364M NICs. The status of the NICs simply says disconnected and there isnt even a light on the switch. Connecting a laptop to the NIC with a crossover shows connectivity when the laptop NIC is at 1000 but drop it down to 100 and the connect light goes off. Connecting to a 1000Mbps switch works fine.

I have tried using the esxcfg-nics command to set the speed and duple to 1000, 100 Full/Half and 10 Full/Half. No luck

I have tried to use ethtool to set the speed of the NIC to 100, but get the result "Cannot set new settings: Function not implemented"

The result of ethtool says:

"Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full"

Does this mean that the NIC supports only 1000? I find this hard to believe as both the NC364M and the onboard NICs are having this problem. Can anyone help?
