difficulty setting up an external NTP server for ESX 3.5

I am having difficulty setting up an external timeserver, which is our AD timeserver. I am running 3.5 patch 1 as a standalone box. If I go to the time configuration, I can see there is an entry for 127.127.1.0 and the service is running. If I try to add an additional IP address or try to remove the current NTP server, I get a warning saying "failed to change the host configuration".

I have a mastering vmware book that gives me instructions to edit a couple of files on the console:

/etc/npt/ntp.conf

restrict 127.0.0.1

retrict default kod nomodify notrap

server 192.168.202.172

driftfile /var/lib/npt./drift

/etc/ntp/step-tickers

Sever 192.168.202.172

After the fist method failed I tried to follow the second method and was quite expecting to see the 192.168.202.172 entry appear in the time configuration properties but unfortunately it never appeared.

Can someone throw some light on the steps on adding an additional timeserver?
