Update Manager Port change

$

I am wondering if Update Manager can be forced to use port 443 communication between the ESX hosts and the Virtual Center Server where Update Manager runs from.  Right now, we see it using port 80 but we would rather it use 443 if possible.  Can this be changed or set somewhere in the Update Manager config?

HA Redundancy failure

I have a cluster with 3 - 3.5 ESX host.

I may have just found a problem while testing my redundancy setup.

I have two Cisco 3750 switches with Port(s) 1 configured for straight through access.

The host has a Vswitch that contains the Console and VMotion nics.

Port 1 on Switch 1 goes to the Console nic of the host

Port 1 on Switch 2 goes to the VMotion nic of the host

When I unplugged the VMotion connection everything stayed up and I am even able to VMotion a VM.

When I unplugged the Console connection everything was still okay.

The problem occurs when I plug the Console connection back in, at that point the host / cluster goes through the "reconfiguring for HA" and all VM's get Migrated (powered off / on) to another host in the cluster.

Any idea on what is going on?

ESX MIBS and HPSIM

I saw an old thread on here that clued me into registering the VMWARE MIBS into HPSIM to increase reporting of ESX server issues. When I run the mxmib command and specify the CFG files, all register fine except the VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB and VMWARE-VMKERNEL-MIB cfg files. I get an errors of:

For TRAPS:    Error reading CFG: MIB node has no parent  Line: 14

For VMKERNEL:   Error reading CFG: MIB node has no parent Line: 12

I don't know if these two actually provide anything meaty to HPSIM, but would like to know how to overcome the errors.

Thanks in advance,

What Version of Linux IS Vmware Built On

I need to find out what version of red hat that vmware esx is built on.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation.

$

I'm getting "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation."  Event ID 51 on some virtual machines. These machines are Windows 2000 SP4 Server and Windows 2003 SP2,. using Buslogic and LSI scsi controllers.

All VMs have the Disk timeout setting set to 60 seconds as recommended by a VMware KB.

All VMs are stored on single LUNs/single volumes using Hardware iSCSI QLogic 4052 cards, connected to dedicated storage VLAN, connected to NetApp 3040, Fibre Channel discs, all LUNs/volumes are in a single aggreate.

I'm not seeing any timeout issues with VMs or Physical machines connected to our iSCSI storage, or any errors in logs on ESX, timeout changes have been made to iSCSI tools installed on servers. We are running ESX 3.0.2 Builds 77863 and 95415.

Any ideas, where to start before I log calls to VMware and NetApp at the same time.

VM showing up as 'unknown (invalid)' after registering

$

One of the VMs running in our ESX3.0.2 environment started showing as '[servername] (invalid)' in our Vcentre.  So I removed it from the inventry with the intention of re-adding at and all being well.  However, after re-adding it (using the 'vmware-cmd -s register' command on the host) it is now coming up in our Vcentre as 'unknown (invalid)'.  Making me think I've taken a step back rather than forward!  The VM is still running as far as I can tell, but Vcentre has no usable info about it...

Any help greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

ESX3.03 & Unable to create partition

$

Hi,

I have recently blown away my SAN recently and am busy now creating new virtual disks for ESX to use.  My SAN is a Dell MD3000i with 30 x 400GB SAS disks.  I have assigned 8 of the physical disks into a RAID 5 group for use by an ESX cluster.  I am able to mount and format LUN 0 successfully but I cannot get LUN 2 to format no matter what I try.  I have looked at all the posts on this board related to this issue and they all talk about using fdisk which doesn't work for me.

This is where I am at right now.

- ESX can see all the LUN's on the SAN as per the output below

esxcfg-mpath -l

Disk vmhba0:0:0 /dev/sda (69376MB) has 1 paths and policy of Fixed

Local 2:14.0 vmhba0:0:0 On active preferred

Enclosure vmhba0:264:0 (0MB) has 1 paths and policy of Fixed

Local 2:14.0 vmhba0:264:0 On active preferred

Disk vmhba40:0:0 /dev/sdb (512000MB) has 1 paths and policy of Fixed

iScsi sw iqn.1998-01.com.vmware:mbtkyesx003-5e8e60e7<->iqn.1984-05.com.dell:powervault.6001e4f0003e0b4c0000000047fdc353 vmhba40:0:0 On active preferred

Disk vmhba40:0:2 (512000MB) has 1 paths and policy of Fixed

iScsi sw iqn.1998-01.com.vmware:mbtkyesx003-5e8e60e7<->iqn.1984-05.com.dell:powervault.6001e4f0003e0b4c0000000047fdc353 vmhba40:0:2 On active preferred

- Doing a "fdisk -l" does not show up anything related to the new non-accessible LUN

- I can mount vmhba40:0:2:0 on a windows machine, format it and use it without any issues.

- This is the output from /vmfs/devices/disks

ls: vml.02000200006001e4f0003e139200001fac4910c89f4d4433303030: No such file or directory

vmhba40:0:2:0

How can I get fdisk to create a partition on the new LUN when it won't even see it?

I did see a post elsewhere that talked about a reprovisioned HP SAN having similar issues due to NTFS data being left behind and I tried everything in that post to no avail.

Please help if you can!

Cheers

Backup Exec 12.5 & MS iSCSI

Hello,

I am running a couple of ESX servers and we are currently backing up using a physycal server connected to an LTO loader. We use Symantec BE 12.5 which runs over the network. I was wondering if it was possible to use the MS iSCSI initiator to backup directly from the SAN without going over the network?

Thanks,

How to access ESX service console

$

Hi all.

I am a TV engineer trying to solve a network issue with our equipment. I am not a network engineer.

I am trying to follow the VMWareKB: 'Troubleshooting network connection issues using Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)' I simply trying to verify the ARP table exists on our ESX server and has some entries.

The KB says to run 'arp -a' to list the ARP table.

To do this I need to open a service console. I have now read 3 or 4 articles on using the Service Console but I still am unable to open it to run the command! I cannot understand what I am doing wrong, either I am incredibly stupid or I am missing something completely.

One article stated, press 'Alt F1' Exactly where do I do this? From a virtual machine connected to the ESX? One article said 'at the VIM summary screen' I've tried logging onto the virtual machine and pointing a web browser at the server, I get an ESX welcome screen with 'Login To Web Access' link, when I click this I get 'Internet Explorer Can't Open The Webpage'

I've had a look at the VIM, I can see the network details for Vswitch on the configuration page including the service console IP address. Can't see how to open a service console. Pointing the VIM at the service console address fails to do anything.

I just need to know how to open the Service console and check the ARP tables as per the KB.

Please dumb down your answers for me!

The root problem is regarding some mains distribution units we are using to power equipment in racks. They have a network connection which we are monitoring using Virtual Machines to report to a third party monitoring and control software. The Virtual Machines are running alarm driver software used to report to the third party. The VM's are on a Blade Server.

We have an issue where one MDU unit was replaced but configured with incorrect Default Gateway address. Within hours of doing this, the monitoring and control software lost connection to the MDU's and one by one, all the MDU units started sending ARP requests - "Who has 10.172.248.254'

Eventually, all MDU's are constantly sending ARP requests and all MDU's have lost connectivity to the VM. If we open the VM machine doing the monitoring and ping an MDU, the ping fails, if we put a laptop in place of an MDU and ping the VM machine, the ping works fine.

If we power off/on the MDU's they come good, but we are a 24/7 operation and power cycling all MDU's is considered to risky.

We had this problem before and the only solution was to rebuild the VM's and assign all MDU's to a new network addresses.

All switches the MDU's are plugged into (Foundry Falstron GS) have been checked by our network support guys and we're told are all good. The Blade server is hosting about 20 VM's and they are working fine monitoring SNMP traffic from other systems.

If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

Calling all old-school ESX 3.0.3 admins!! Any idea how I would go about getting some legacy Server2003 VM's out of an old ESX 3.0.3 and into a ESXi 5.5 environment?

Any idea how I would go about getting some legacy Server2003 VM's out of an old ESX 3.0.3 and into a ESXi 5.5 environment?  I dont really have any experience with kit this old, I don't seem to be able to browse the datastores using either the fat or integrated host client.  Also I dont seem to be able to WINSCP to the host and browse the datastores sicne my username and password is constantly rejected for root.  Also there does not see mto be an option to export the VM using the fat client.  I have even tried connecting WorkStation 10 to the host and I cant see any means to get the VM's off in there either.

Raid Read & Write policy for ESX 3.5

Just wondering, creating a new vmfs partition on an ESX 3.5 server after adding some disks...

On a DELL PowerEdge 2900 / PERC 5/I RAID controller with SAS disks, the Raid Read policy, can be either No Read Ahead, Read Ahead or Adaptive Read ahead.

For the write policy, my choices are : Write trough, write back, force write back...

What would be the best choice Read & Write policy on a RAID5 with 3 disks...

Thanks !!!

VM disconnected after host failed - How to manually reconnect?

$

Hi

During some planned downtime today, i came across an issue which may cause problems in the future - so i am just looking for any insight...

We have 6 Esx hosts running Win2k3 vm's. All VM's reside on SAN storage. HA/DRS is in use and working fine.

Basically we were going through each host and shutting down VM's, then putting each host in to Maintenance mode. Each host was then restarted.

One of the host servers had a 'pink screen of death' on reboot. Since this host did not come back up, its VM shows as disconnected in Virtual Center. Luckily this host came back up after a second reboot, and its VM was able to power on. During the 'pink screen'/failed host I was unable to migrate or disconnect the VM and reconnect it on another host.

As the host was in maintenance mode, HA obviously wasnt able to migrate the vm to a working host.

My question is - If the failed host had not come back up after a second reboot, how would i manually disconnect the VM and power it up on a working ESX host? I know this can be done using cmd line, but not sure of the proccess. I cannot really play with it as its a 24/7 production system.

Obviously, i still have to find out why my server 'pink screened' but thats another days work!

thanks in advance for any replies.

EXT3-fs error (device sd(8,86)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

I  am getting this error constantly now on one of my ESX Hosts.  It is booting off a SAN.  The exact error is:

EXT3-fs error (device sd(8,86)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

What is this and what can I do.  The server is still up but it is not functioning as a ESX HOST - it is down (RED) not responding in the VIC.

Thanks!

unable to remove orphaned and inaccessible vm from inventory.

Had a crash during an svmotion, vm orphaned and tried to readd to inventory but no luck.  I have since restored the vm from a san snapshot and deleted all the original files and it now sits in a whole new folder but I cannot remove the 2 infentory items I tried to readd it after the intial failure.

I have rebooted the server, I have restarted mgmt-vmware, vmware-vmkauthd, and vmware-vpxa. -- several times now.

vmware-cmd -l on host does not list any references to the ghosted vm.  cannot remove from vclient

vitoolkit (powershell) will list the 2 vms,

get-vm -Name vmname  -

produces the name of the vm object.

but I cannot:

get-vm -Name vmname | remove-vm  -- doesnt work because I get this error message..."Remove-VM : 5/11/2009 9:05:02 PM    Remove-VM    A general system error occurred: You must power off the virtual machine and complete the migration before invoking this operation."

nothing I have been trying gets me to remove the orphan.

Adding NFS Storage

I'm testing an NFS storage implementation and ran into a problem. My NAS is just an old DL380 with some 146GB drives and I'm running FreeNAS.

So the storage setup went ok, but when I try to add the storage in ESX it thinks about it for a minute, then pops back the error: Error during the configuration of the host: NFS Error: Unable to Mount Filesystem: Unable to connect to NFS server." I noticed that there's no place to pass and ID or password in the ESX configuration portion and I'm thinking that may be the problem. FreeNAS kind of acts like it wants to setup users and groups for access, but I don't see how I can share it to "anyone." Does anyone have any tips for setting this up correctly?
