/proc/meminfo shows 272MB. RAM lost or "hidden"

Hi. I'm installing ESX 3.0.2 onto non HCL hardware. When the system boots I see through /proc/meminfo and 'top' that only 272MB of RAM is "present" - the machine has 4GB installed. I've tried altering the kernel parameters via grub so that MEM=272M is changed to 2048 & 4096, both of which cause a kernel panic.

However I'm wondering if this really is a fault or just poor comprehension on my part. I know the service console reserves 272MB - is this what I'm seeing. Is the rest of the RAM "hidden" from the kernel until I actually allocate it to a VM?

Should I see the real physical ram size in /proc/meminfo?
