Backup Exec 12.5 issues with VMWare Agent

We just got backup Exec 12.5 and are currently testing with the VMWare agent to do backups.  It takes a fairly long time to do the backups.  One example is a 20GB VM takes 40 mins and a 50 GB VM takes 1 hour and 36 minutes.  The setup is as follows:

1)   Backup Exec, VCB Proxy and Vm Converter are all on the same server.  That server also runs ISCSI Initiator to access our San.  All servers are on Gigabit ethernet.

2) the Virtual Center server is on one of the vms

Also the restores are really slow. about 200 mb/minute for the Job rate.

Any ideas?
